Maria is a Patent Attorney in training. She assists the Patents and Designs team, particularly in the chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, and medical technology spaces. 

Background

Maria is completing her Bachelor of Chemical Process Engineering (Honours) and Bachelor of Creative Intelligence and Innovation at the University of Technology Sydney. She has gained practical experience in the aerospace sector, focusing on the design and formulation of speciality chemicals for major airlines, as well as in chemical plant design using ASPEN Plus, nanomedicine, and materials science. 

Maria has completed her honours thesis, on fluorescent upconversion nanoparticles (UCNPs) used in image-guided surgery of malignant intracranial tumours. Specifically, she focused on the unique tumour microenvironment and vasculature of glioblastoma multiforme growths, and the surface modifications needed to improve targeting specificity, biocompatibility and stability of UCNPs in vivo. Her work included creating a novel UCNP design. 

Maria also has a keen interest in maths, and projects involving the principles of heat & mass transfer, fluid mechanics and system dynamics/control.  

In 2023 Maria was a finalist for the ZONTA Women in Engineering & Information Technology Award.
