After several reviews IPONZ is implementing a new fee schedule for patents and trade marks. The new fee schedule will take effect…

Intellectual Property Office of New Zealand (IPONZ) is implementing a new fee schedule for patents and trade marks, effective from 13 February 2020.

Most patent fees are increasing substantially, including being doubled, tripled or more. Fee increases will affect patent filing, renewals, examination and maintenance fees.

It may be advantageous to request examination of NZ patent applications – or file new applications with an examination request – by 12 February 2020. Not only will this escape a 50% increase in the examination fee, but also avoid substantial excess claims fees payable on acceptance of the application.

Trade mark fees in general will decrease.

The full details of the new IPONZ fee changes are located here. Please contact us for advice on how these changes affect your IP portfolio.

IP Australia is currently also reviewing its fees, but no announcements have been made yet.
